The Walk

  • You can enjoy fine views of Boynton Hall from the paths which radiate from the church.
  • Starting near to the church, walk along the narrow lane into the woods.  The stream is the Gypsey Race, which rises in the hills near Wold Newton and flows into Bridlington Harbour.
  • Carry on up the hill until you arrive at the minor road known as Roman Road, Woldgate or Fond Brig Lane.  This ancient road is believed to have been an important trade route in Neolithic times.
  • At the minor crossroads turn right, and right again, to descend through Sands Wood and re-cross the Gypsey Race.  At the next junction follow a public path along the edge of West Lawn Wood and back to the village centre.

Features of Interest

- There are turkeys all over St. Andrew's Church in Boynton but the famous turkey lectern recalls the story of explorer William Strickland. He lived in Boynton Hall before his death in 1598. He sailed to the New World in search of gold, and came back with only a few turkeys. It is said that he introduced the bird to Britain.
